The golden autumn at Hazelnut House is pure magic. Dew lies gently on the dry grasses, and cobwebs woven among the meadow flowers glisten in the morning sun. The air smells of late summer and thanksgiving. The leaves in the surrounding forest turn shades of gold, yellow, and brown — as if nature had mixed the most beautiful colours in her own watercolour box. And those clouds, that brilliant sunlight! Like a golden stripe, it rises from the morning mist on the horizon. Rustle your feet through the dry foliage in the beech forest, listen to the call of wild geese, and find the large nuts from the old walnut tree scattered on the ground. Those who visit in autumn should not miss a hike along the Müllertal Trail from Echternach to Berdorf — a true feast for the senses.
The pears and apples in the orchard are now perfectly ripe. On this Saturday morning, we pull on our warm rubber boots, wrap ourselves in wool sweaters and wax jackets, and head into the old fruit yard. We pick the first apple straight from the branch and take a bite — what a flavour! From the vegetable beds, we gather beetroots and pumpkins. Coming home with our autumn harvest feels so wonderful at this time of year.
In the large sandstone fireplace of the open gallery, the fire is already crackling. We put the kettle on for tea and begin preparing our festive autumn lunch. The menu of this season is truly heartwarming. In the afternoon, we celebrate with a Tweed Walk — tea and homemade cake in hand — as we wander toward the woods, accompanied by the Scottish sounds of our legendary bagpiper Jacques.
